Learning to rest

"Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to your work your judgment will be surer. Go some distance away because then the work appears smaller and more of it can be taken in at a glance and a lack of harmony and proportion is more readily seen." ~  Leonardo Da Vinci

I have put the boys in school because my body is burnt out. I haven't been looking after myself, and this is the result. Other the last month I have had to learn how to rest. I had forgotten what that looks like. I know how to give my soul rest, but have failed to give my body rest.  I have had to learn how to set healthy boundaries. I have had to find out what refreshes me. I have had to learn to live within my limitations.
Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly."-Jesus

So in my endeavor to find out what refreshes me, I used my gift voucher for a  60 minute massage and pedicure that my husband and boys gave me for Mother's Day. And guess what? It refreshed me. A massage forces me to stay still in the one spot for a whole hour. My massage therapist is so good at what she does and comes to my home. I had her set up in my garden. (Don't worry, it's secluded and neighbours can't see.) She also doesn't talk, at all during the massage, which leaves me alone with my thoughts. I loved it.

I asked her what would she charge to come to my house weekly and she gave me an offer too good to refuse. So my husband and I are going to take turns and get a massage once a fortnight each!

"Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a waste of time."~ Sir John Lubbock

Another thing I learned that helps me relax is a bath with scented candles. I am going to make sure I have more hot baths! This particular candle is a yummy smelling soy candle, and is available through How Beautiful Is community. The sale of each one funds a Balinese woman through the Shine program.

I took some time while I was by myself to explore my creative side and create some art.

I found that the whole creative process relaxes me. So I am going to make sure I make time to create.

"He that can take rest is greater than he that can take cities."~ Benjamin Franklin

Taking the time to sit and  have tea and heart to heart discussions with friends also refreshes me. I love being social and too much time alone without good conversation with friends can cause me to shrivel up inside. One conversation with a friend that I can trust my heart with can immediately uplift me.

When I can't be face to face with a friend, I have found social media to be the next best thing. Over the last few years, I have struggled with social media, and letting it take over my life. Over the past month, I have found a happy medium and worked out how to use social media, and not let it use me! I also realised that I was condemning myself for letting social media over run my life, instead of living in His grace.

"When life gets you down, sometimes it's best to just stay down for a moment, let yourself rest... and then get up later." -  Daniella
Kessler

I love Twitter and Instragram. I follow people who tweet encouraging things, and people that I have an online or in real life relationship with. By doing this, I cut out all the negative chatter and find I come away feeling uplifted. I am no longer concerned with how many followers I have or feeling bad if someone follows me and I don't follow them back. I have also set boundaries in my use and find that if I feel it taking over my life, I simply unplug for a few days. The same goes for Instagram.

The other thing I have always found relaxing is writing blog post. I find expressing myself through writing rejuvenating. I plan to find a day with a few hours in it, that is just for me that I can rest and relax, once a week. A day where I can indulge in the above activities and 'check out' from everyday life for a little while. It might take some juggling around, but for me to function long term, it needs to be done.

So I am learning to rest. I am learning to take care of me. Because it is my responsibility to take time to rest, and set healthy boundaries and work within my limitations- nobody else's.

How about you? How do you like to rest?

  1. I loved reading this Jo because I've been praying that God would show you how to rest - I know it's easier said than done!
Its funny as mums we get so caught up in our families that we forget to take time out for ourselves, we think we do until we realise we haven't and our bodies or minds are screaming out for rest:) For me, it's solitude (as I'm an introvert at heart) :) Hubby ensures I get my dose of solitude as and when I need it:) I love being by myself and having time to ponder, think, meditate etc in silence:) Keep enjoying your period of rest! hugs.

    1. Thank you Rosemary. You have no idea I appreciate your prayers. And as you can see, they are being answered.
I love that your hubby knows that you need time by yourself and gives you that. xo

  2. Always the right timing! I really struggle with resting. I am not one who can sit still for long - my mind is always racing and I'm always thinking ahead to the next thing, which is probably why I end up cranky and overwhelmed. At the moment, my body is telling me to stop, to slow down, to take the time just to 'be'. I really need to listen to it.

    1. Oh Deb, we are on such a similar journey aren't we? I too get cranky and overwhelmed without rest. You know what they say - if mamma aint happy, aint nobody happy! I hope you listen to your body and find your own way to rest. xo
