You will find rest for your souls

I have a night time ritual that I perform with my boys every night as I tuck them into bed. Bed time conversations are some of the most sweetest and tender moments that I share with the boys. It is at the end of the day when they are settled down in their beds that they reveal their hearts to me - their fears, their dreams, their excitement. If I rush this precious time, I risk missing out on hearing things that they long to tell me during the day, but due to busyness and distractions, are unable to, until their heads hit the pillow, and they are still.

It is the same in my own life. At times I am so busy and distracted during the day, that I don't get to tell Him everything I long to tell Him, until I am still and we are alone. I imagine the Father longs for these times with me and treasures them, as I do with my own children. He always makes time for me. In fact, He went to great lengths to make sure that He could have those moments with me, by sending His Son Jesus. The sin that separated me from God before I accepted His gift of salvation, no longer separates us - and for that I am eternally grateful.

At night I say two scriptures to the boys as I stroke their face and hair:

So don't worry, because I am with you. Don't be afraid, because I am your God. I will make you strong and will help you; I will support you with my right hand that saves you. {Isaiah 41:10}
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;  in all your ways acknowledge Him, and he will make your paths straight {Proverbs 3:5-6}
I then say to them: "I love you for Eternity!",cuddle and kiss them and leave the room.

Leader Boy warrior said to me one night, "Mum, as soon as you start saying the first scripture, my body relaxes and I feel so tired."  It is his trigger for his body to relax and rest. Courageous Boy Warrior insists on listening to the Father's Love Letter on his mp3 player after I leave. When I asked why he liked  listening to it he said, " I love the soft music and hearing about God's love for me. It makes me feel sleepy." It is his trigger for his body to relax and rest.
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and   I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. {Matthew 11:28-29}

 There are times when my soul is uneasy and there is turmoil inside my heart. At these times, just like my sons, I need things to relax me. Just like my boy warriors have different things that trigger their bodies to relax, I have different things that trigger my soul to be at rest. When my soul is uneasy I use these triggers to relax and rest in Him.

 I have a simple exercise book that I written in scriptures in. They are exerts of His love letters to me - words from the very heart of God that speak of His love for me. When I read these scriptures, my soul immediately feels relaxed, and I rest in Him. Another trigger is music. I love Jesus Culture .The passion, rawness and authentic worship that this band produces resonates with me. The lyrics speak of His love and are seasoned with His Word. There are so many of their songs that immediately put my soul at rest, as they remind me of His love for me.

You won't relent until you have it all | My heart is yours
I'll set You as a seal upon my heart | As a seal upon my arm
For there is love that is as strong as death | Jealousy demanding as the grave
Many waters cannot quench this love
Come be the fire inside of me | Come be the flame upon my heart
Come be the fire inside of me | Until You and I are one
So why do these triggers relax my soul and cause me to rest in Him? Because they remind me of His never-stopping, never-giving-up, unconditional, grace and love for me. When I  focus on how much He loves me, the things that were worrying me disappear. When I focus on His love and remind myself that He too cares about the same things that I care about, my soul relaxes, and I rest in Him. I find rest for my soul and I know that the God that made the heavens and the earth, loves me more than anything in this world, and He takes care of me.

He whispers to me, "I love you for Eternity!" and I know that it is well with my soul.

Still taking lessons from the King,

  6. Thank you so much for sharing that song! I hadn't heard it and I just love it!

    What a great truth that God gives us rest and our children can learn that too. It is such a powerful thing, in this crazy busy world we live in, to learn to find rest in Him. How much more will our children need to learn to find rest in Him?

    Such an encouraging post! Thank you for blessing us with it today!

  7. You shared a wonderful comparison of the time you spend with your boys before bed and your time sharing with the Lord. Sometimes I am anxious because of circumstances that have happened throughout the day...and when it comes to time to sleep, my eyes are wide open. But, when I open His word and read some of the scriptures, I relax and sleep so much better. My dreams are sweet, too. In addition, when God is the last thing I'm thinking about before I fall asleep, I find that He is the first thing I am thinking about when I awake!

    Thanks for sharing, Jo.

  14. I love this song by Jesus Culture as well. Being reminded that He won't relent until He holds all of my heart causes me to exhale and rest. Sometimes I need to be reminded that He is the one who does all of the work - I just need to let go and trust.
